Texas A&M Equestrian Starts Season at No. 6
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M equestrian team took a No. 6 preseason ranking in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association poll, the varsity equestrian national governing body announced today.
The Aggies join all three other Southeastern Conference teams on the list in the league’s second season of sponsoring the sport. No. 1 Georgia leads the way with No. 2 Auburn and No. 3 South Carolina close behind. No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 5 Kansas State also rank ahead of Texas A&M, while seventh-ranked Baylor, No. 8 South Dakota State, No. 9 TCU and No. 10 UT-Martin round out the top 10.
The 2013-14 season begins across the nation on Sept. 20, while the Aggies’ first meet of the year is Oct. 5 at Kansas State. The team will compete in its annual intra-squad Maroon & White Scrimmage at noon on Sept. 20 at the Brazos County Expo Complex.
The Aggies ended the 2012-13 season at No. 8 in the polls with both the hunter seat and western squads in the quarterfinal round of the NCEA Championships in Waco with a 7-10 overall record (5-7 hunt seat, 6-6 western).
This year, the team returns 37 riders from last season’s squad and adds 15 newcomers to the roster. Among the returning student-athletes are 2013 NCEA All-American Molli Jacobs, All-SEC selection Laura Sumrall and four sophomores – the most of any school in the conference – who were listed on the SEC All-Freshman team in the spring: Hannah Jechow, Marlena Parker, Logan Pluhar and Hannah Williams.
In January of 2014, the team will make the move from the Brazos County Expo Complex in Bryan to Texas A&M’s brand new Thomas G. Hildebrand DVM ’56 Equine Complex in College Station.
