Dumezich Tabbed National Player of the Week
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - For the first time in her career, Texas A&M softball senior Mel Dumezich has been named the USA Softball National Player of the Week, the national governing body announced today.
Dumezich (Whiting, Ind.) threw her first two career no-hitters this week in run-rule shutouts of Stephen F. Austin and Southeastern Louisiana. The senior handed out just one walk and one unearned run in five appearances on the week, picking up three solo shutouts and her second save of the season as she struck out 22 batters and gave up just eight hits in 25 innings of work.
"I think the award for Mel is well-deserved," Head Coach Jo Evans said. "She did it all. She hit great and really came through for us in clutch situations. On the mound she was basically flawless. It's well-deserved and Mel has taken a great leadership role for us. I think her play is inspirational to our whole team."
Dumezich also shined from the plate, hitting .500 on the week through seven games. She contributed five runs on nine hits, including five doubles and a home run, and added seven RBI and two walks.
"I'm honored to be named Player of the Week," Dumezich said. "Our team is off to a great start this year and we're excited to keep it going. I credit my team and coaches with my success this week. I couldn't do what I love to do without them."
This marks the first time an Aggie softball player has received national weekly honors since All-American Megan Gibson was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week on April 15, 2008. Gibson was also named USA Softball Player of the Week on March 4, 2008.
The No. 5 Aggies are off to the program's best start at 17-0 and have the program's highest national ranking since February of 2009 when the reigning national runners-up earned a No. 5 preseason mark.
The team hosts Sam Houston State in a single game Wednesday at 5 p.m. before heading to Orlando, Fla., for the Citrus Classic this weekend. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
