14th Ranked Aggie Women’s Golf to Play in FSU Match-Up
COLLEGE STATION, Texas-The 14th ranked Texas A&M women's golf team will compete this Friday through Sunday at the Inaugural Florida State Match-Up in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Aggies are beginning the spring season following a very successful fall tournament schedule, finishing in the Top-8 of all four fall competitions. A&M finished a season best second at the Alamo Invitational the last time out with a -8 team score over three rounds of play.
"We made mistakes early on in the fall season, but I am really excited that we corrected those right after our first event," Head Coach Trelle McCombs said about the fall season. "We played two great days of golf and fumbled a little bit in the last round. The team made it their mantra to finish the round and that helped us finish strong in the fall."
Individually the fall schedule was highlighted by senior Mary Michael Maggio's victory at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. Maggio finished the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at the Holston Hills Country Club in 3rd, just two shots behind the individual champion.
Maggio will be joined in team play at the Florida State Match-Up by junior Katerina Ruzickova, junior Natalie Reeves, senior Sarah Beth Davis and junior Chelsea Mocio.
"I have always tried to prepare my teams to peak at the right time going into the post-season and I think we are on track to do that again this year" McCombs added.
The 54-hole tournament is hosted by the Florida State University and will be held at the Southwood Golf Club. The course is a typical par-72 and stretches an impressive 7,172 yards with individual and team champions determined in the usual fashion.
The first round of the tournament will begin with shotgun starts on Friday morning at 11 a.m. with the Aggies teeing off at 11:40 a.m. on the first hole. A&M will be paired with FSU. Live scoring for the event can be found at GolfStatResults.com.
"This spring has been fun so far and we have really concentrated on short game and repetition so we perform better in pressure situations," McCombs added about playing in pressure situations early in the spring. "We have faced adverse conditions in qualifying and that has helped get us ready for the spring season."
The Florida State Match-Up Tournament is a very unique event and the first one of its kind in NCAA Women's Golf. When the invitations were sent out, six teams were initially invited to Tallahassee to play at the Southwood Golf Club. Those six teams were then able to contact a team of their choice to partner up with them for the tournament.
The team partnerships this year consist of head coaches partnering up with their former assistant coaches who are now coaching their own programs, former college teammates, rivals, friends, and teams that have fun together.
The goal of the tournament is to get the spring season kicked off with some fun and friendly competition. The Florida State coaching staff wanted coaches and players to be able to participate in a tournament that was unlike anything they play in all year.
The twelve teams will tee off in twosomes for the first two rounds and then in a final round shotgun in threesomes. The twosomes will consist of the partner teams playing together and for this year the partners are as follows: Florida State/Texas A&M, Oklahoma/Georgia, Notre Dame/Michigan, Tennessee/Texas San Antonio, Furman/Kansas, and UNC Greensboro/UNC Wilmington.
The Match-Up portion of the tournament will be determined by taking the best four scores from the partners (which is a total of ten players) and the worst score to make the Match Up team total. At the end of the tournament, the teams with the lowest score will win the 'Match-Up'.
