Fifth-Annual Hard Hats for Little Heads Set for Tuesday
COLLEGE STATION, Texas-- Texas ENT & Allergy, Texas A&M Athletics, Aggie Athletes Involved (AAI), Academy Sports + Outdoors and supporting sponsors invite local second graders to learn the importance of helmet safety. The program will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12 on the Texas A&M campus at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium beginning at approximately 9 a.m.
Approximately 2,800 second grade students from the independent school districts of Bryan, College Station, Navasota, Brenham, Anderson-Shiro and Mumford will attend this year's event. Texas A&M student-athletes from football, baseball, softball, and equestrian will demonstrate the importance of helmet safety in their respective sport. Upon returning to their respective campuses, each student will receive a bicycle helmet, provided by Academy Sports + Outdoors.
Mayors from the cities of Bryan, College Station, Brenham, Anderson, Navasota, as well as other community supporters will be present. The Hard Hats for Little Heads program stresses the importance of wearing a helmet when bicycling, in-line skating, skateboarding, 4-wheeling or taking part in any other wheeled sport to reduce head injuries. Over the last five years, about 10,000 local second graders have attended and benefitted from the Hard Hats program.
On average, 250 children in the United States under the age of 14 die each year because of a bicycle crash. Another 300,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for severe head injuries. Many of these accidents could have been prevented if the children had worn bicycle helmets. Bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent, yet only about 40 percent of cyclists wear one when they ride. Texas ENT & Allergy, AAI, Texas A&M Athletics, Academy Sports + Outdoors, and participating sponsors want to ensure our kids are wearing helmets when they ride, glide or drive.
