HEAD WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH GARY BLAIR
Opening
Statement
"We're ranked number 12 in the nation in
the coaches' poll, 15 in the other. The coaches' poll came out today for the
SEC. We're ranked number three, closely behind Georgia. A lot of that is we're
picked because of where our program is right now. Remember back four or five
years ago when the team was picked higher than where our program was. Our
program was building a fan base. Our program was learning how to host NCAA regionals
and finding out how to get to the Sweet Sixteen. Swish Appeal just came out
with the top-50 programs. Texas A&M was number six. The people across the
nation do not believe we're going away. We're here to stay. Right now, our
program is probably a little bit better than our team, but our team has
tremendous potential. We have four freshmen right now that are playing in my
top 10. They're going to have to get their feet wet and make some mistakes.
They're all solid and very good. That puts a whole lot of pressure on Kelsey
Bone. Teams are going to try and take her away first and then worry about
Bellock and Scott at the three and the four. In one way, I feel great where we
are. Season tickets are great. We're still hosting an NCAA regional and across the
nation we're well thought of."
On surprises
"Tori Scott is the quickest kid we've had in a long time. I
think she's having a very good fall camp. Kristi Bellock was our best player
over in Italy. When the lights come on, we're going to figure out how well she
can play under pressure. I really like the athleticism of both of those girls
right now."
On the schedule
"We need to be able to handle early
adversity with the schedule we're playing, because we're going to take some
hits. We made this schedule because that's where our program is right now. We
made this schedule to try and energize a fan-base in November/December instead
of waiting for January, February and March. We're experimenting every day in
practice."
