Women's Tennis Competes at Texas Regional in Waco
The singles and doubles winners will receive an automatic berth in the ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 8 -11 in New York.
"In relationship to improving individually and collectively, the regional affords us to have all our players and doubles teams compete against the top talent in Texas," A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. "Win or lose, we will surely profit from the competition."
Aggie senior and All-American Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar (pronounced KEEN-tah-nar) is the No. 1 seed in the 128-player singles draw. She received a first-round bye and is scheduled to take the court Friday at 3 p.m. in the round of 64.
Seniors Cristina Stancu, Nazari Urbina and Wen Sun are seeded at No. 3, 5 and 6, respectively, and also received first-round byes. All three will be in action starting at 1 p.m. Friday in the round of 64.
Freshmen Stefania Hristov and Anna Mamalat are No. 17-32 seeds and open first-round play Friday at 11:30 a.m. Hristov takes on Solomlya Zinko of Rice, and Mamalat faces Liselot Koenen of Houston.
Sun and Urbina are the No. 5 seed in the 64-team doubles draw. They received a first-round bye and will open play Saturday at 8 a.m.
The doubles team of Sanchez-Quintanar and Mamalat opens first-round play at 8 a.m. on Friday against Wanda Beguelin and Anastasia Burobina of Texas-Pan American.
In other first-round action, Hristov and Stancu will take on Victoria Parshikova and Agustina Valenzuela of North Texas, Friday at 8 a.m.
