Aggie Softball Sweeps McLennan College
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M softball team swept a doubleheader with McLennan College Tuesday at the Aggie Softball Complex. A 17-4 victory in game one set the tone for the night as the Aggies took a 7-2 win in game two. A&M is now 5-1 on the fall exhibition season.
The Aggies put up all 17 runs in the first four innings of game one and didn’t allow the Highlassies to cross the plate until the fifth. Senior Mel Dumezich worked the first four innings shutout innings from the circle, tossing just one walk and no hits. Sophomore Sara Mireles closed the game, giving up four runs on five hits in three innings of relief.
Junior Nicole Morgan started the scoring frenzy with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, and also plated a run on a double in the second. Dumezich hit a pair of home runs and a single for four RBI on the game, while freshman Breanna Dozier had a two-RBI bomb in the first.
Also contributing to the Aggies’ slew of runs in game one were junior Jenna Stark (1 RBI, 2H), Freshman Alex Masek (1 sac fly), sophomore Brittany Clopton (1 RBI, 1H), freshman Cali Lanphear (1 RBI, 2H), junior Taran Tyler (1 RBI, 2H), and junior Allison Garrett (1 sac fly).
Game two got off to a much closer start. A sac fly by Morgan again scored the first run of the game, but McLennan retaliated with a pair of runs in the second to take their first lead of the night. A single by Stark in the bottom of the inning tied the game until Masek scored on an error for the 3-2 lead in the fifth. Junior Cassie Tysarczyk homered in the same half-inning to give the Aggies a 4-2 lead.
Tyler ripped a home run over the fence in left field in the bottom of the sixth to pick up two RBI and expand the A&M lead to 6-2 over the Highlassies. Stark earned her second RBI of the game with a single up the middle in the sixth for the final 7-2 score.
Sophomore Lauren Ainsley threw a complete game, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks while fanning 10 MCC batters.
