Day 1 Results - ITA All-American Championships

LOS ANGELES - Texas A&M senior Nazari Urbina posted a hard fought 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory over 49th-ranked Alexandra Cercone of Florida in the first round of the 64-player qualifying singles draw, Tuesday at the 2012 Riviera ITA All-American Championships on the UCLA campus.

Urbina, from Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico and ranked No. 38 in the preseason ITA singles rankings, then fell to Hanna Yu of Yale, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round.

Aggie senior Wen Sun (Dalian, China) was pitted against 42nd ranked and No. 9-16 seed Annie Goransson of California in the qualifying first round and fell, 6-3, 7-6 (6), but rebounded nicely with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over 63rd-ranked Jaklin Alawi of South Carolina in the first round of the backdraw. Sun will take on Li Xi of Virginia in the second round, Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. (PT)

In the qualifying doubles draw, Sun and Urbina posted a first-round victory, topping Sophia Bergner and Steffi Rath of Denver, 8-4, to advance. The Aggie duo, ranked No. 44 in the preseason doubles rankings, will take on unranked Melissa Kopinshi and Rachael White of Illinois, Wednesday at 10 a.m. (PT). The Illinois pair upset Florida's No. 8 seed and 29th ranked Sofie Oyen and Cercone in the opening round.

The No. 2-seed Aggie duo of Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Cristina Stancu, No. 22 in the ITA preseason doubles rankings, suffered an 8-6 setback to 43rd-ranked Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland of Duke in the 32-team qualifying doubles first round on Tuesday. A&M will face 25th-ranked and No. 2 seed Monica Pezzotti and Dylan Windom of Kansas in the backdraw, Wednesday at 3 p.m. (PT).

Sanchez-Quintanar (Campo de Criptana, Spain) and Stancu (Constanta, Romania), ranked No. 4 and No. 17, respectively, in singles, will be competing in the singles main draw, which begins on Thursday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Singles semifinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 8-11 in Flushing, N.Y.
