Aggies Drop 6-1 Decision to Tulsa
TULSA, Oklahoma - Alexis Klegou tallied the lone point for the Aggies winning at No. 1 singles on Sunday as No. 23-ranked Tulsa beat No. 11-ranked Texas A&M, 6-1, at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
"Tulsa has always played us tough and especially indoors," Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. "They came out with a lot of energy and got after us in doubles to take that point and seize the momentum. In singles, they got out front early and took it to us."
The Aggies were coming off of an emotional 4-3 Friday victory over No. 14-ranked Texas in Houston late Friday to win the Texas Cup.
"This is a tough pill to swallow, but we have to bounce back and get ready to face a very good Kentucky squad on Friday at the National Indoor Championships," Denton said. "We have to work on some of our weaknesses."
Klegou, a senior co-captain from Dunkerque, France, defeated Japie De Klerk, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 singles. Klegou is ranked No. 19 in the latest ITA singles rankings.
Colin Hoover, from Victoria, Texas, and the other senior co-captain for the Aggies, dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision on the No. 2 line to Ashley Watling, who is ranked No. 83 in the ITA and is the top-ranked Tulsa player.
Aggie senior John Lewis had his winning streak stopped at five matches dropping a straight sets match (6-2, 6-2) to No. 88-ranked Grant Ive at the No. 4 line.
In doubles competition, Tulsa has two ranked duos in No. 3 Ashley Watling and Clifford Marsland as well as No. 37 Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson. Watling and Marsland was first off of the court with a 8-2 win over Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow for the Aggies at No. 1 doubles. A&M's Hoover and Lewis combined at No. 2 doubles to outlast Ive and T. Jackson in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3). The Golden Hurricane won the doubles point by virtue of an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles with De Klerk and Lucian Gheorghe beating A&M's Klegou and Jordan Szabo.
Next up for the Aggies will be the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at Charlottesville, Virginia, on Feb. 17-20. In the first-round pairing, the Aggies, seeded No. 11, will face No. 6 Kentucky at 8 a.m. central on Friday. The Aggies and Wildcats are paired with the No. 14 Texas and the No. 3 Ohio State. Also in the Aggies' end of the bracket are Stanford (No. 9), Baylor (No. 7), Auburn (No. 15) as well as host Virginia (No. 2).
