Brian Polian
Position: Special Teams Coordinator/Tight Ends
Hometown: The Bronx, N.Y.
Alma Mater: John Carroll University
Graduating Year: 1997

Fresh off back-to-back BCS games with the Stanford Cardinal, Brian Polian became a part of Kevin Sumlin's first coaching staff at Texas A&M in 2012 and will coach the Aggies' tight ends and coordinate the special teams units.

Polian served as the Cardinal's special teams coordinator and safeties coach in both his seasons in Palo Alto, Calif., and took on the role of recruiting coordinator in 2011. Known as a tremendous recruiter, Polian was named one of the top recruiters in the country by Tom Lemming's / MaxPreps in November of 2011 and one of the best in the Pac 10 Conference in February of 2011 by ESPN.com

Polian played a key role in the success of the Cardinal program, which finished 12-1 and No. 4 in 2010 and 11-2 and No. 7 in 2011. Polian coached all-conference placekickers both seasons at Stanford with Nate Whitaker taking first-team honors in 2010 and Jordan Williamson earning second-team honors in 2011. Also in 2010, linebacker Chike Amajoyi also garnered first team All-Pac-10 honors as a special teams player.

Before coaching at Stanford, Polian spent five seasons on the staff at Notre Dame where he headed up Notre Dame's special teams units while also holding coaching duties with the defensive backs and linebackers. A nominee for AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2008, Polian helped the Irish to three bowl games, including two BCS bowls. He was named one of the top 20 recruiters in the country and the Big 10/Midwest Recruiter of the Year by Rivals.com, and a Top Three National Recruiter by Tom Lemming.

Throughout his tenure as special teams coordinator at Notre Dame, the Irish special teams were some of the best in the nation and recorded some of the top marks in recent school history. Notre Dame blocked or deflected 10 punts, 10 field goals and three PATs during his stay at South Bend. In addition, the Irish returned four punts and a kickoff for a touchdown.

Under his guidance, the Irish boasted the best kickoff coverage unit in the country in 2008, allowing just 16.5 yards per return. It was the best yards per return average by an Irish team since 1975. The Irish punt coverage unit shined as well, allowing just 6.0 yards per return.

In 2007, the Irish ranked 13th in the nation in net punting at 37.9 yards per game, marking the second straight season the team had finished in the top 15 nationally in that category.

Prior to Notre Dame, Polian served on the staff at Central Florida, where he coached the running backs and was recruiting coordinator. He mentored running back Alex Haynes, who became the Golden Knights all-time leading rusher - finishing with 3,356 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Other coaching stops for Polian include Buffalo (2001-03, special teams coordinator/running backs), Baylor (1999-2000), Buffalo (1998) and Michigan State (1997).

Polian graduated from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in history and later added a master's degree in education from Baylor in 2000.

A three-year letterman as a linebacker, he was named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference team in 1996 and helped the 1994 and 1996 teams to top-10 finishes in the NCAA Division II rankings.

Polian's father, Bill, was longtime NFL executive with the Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills, and his older brother Chris, served as the Colts GM from 2009-11. His younger brother Dennis also works in player personnel with the NFL.

He was a contributing author to the AFCA book, "A Complete Guide to Special Teams."

Born December 22, 1974, in the Bronx, N.Y., Polian and his wife, Laura, have one son, Aidan Doyle.
