COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 12Texas A&M men’s tennis team won both contests on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center to begin the 2014 campaign 2-0. The Aggies were dominant early against Louisiana-Lafayette en-route to a 7-0 victory before cruising to a 7-0 victory against Texas-Pan American.

“I was really pleased with how we came out today, you never know in the first match how the guys will come out,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said.  “After seeing them play, I thought Louisiana-Lafayette and Pan American were better than I had anticipated coming into the day. Overall l thought our guys played really sharp for the first day.”

In the opening contest against the Ragin’ Cajuns, the sophomore tandem of Harry Adams and Shane Vinsant earned the first doubles victory of the spring, downing Damian Farinola and Edgar Lopez, 6-0, from the No. 2 line. Adams, the nation’s 19th-ranked singles player, secured the match victory for the Aggies by downing Lopez, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 line, putting A&M up 4-0. Vinsant narrowly edged out Rick de Groot, 6-0, 5-6 (3), 1-0 (10-6), at the No. 1 position, pushing the A&M lead to 6-0.

Jeremy Efferding, Junior Ore and Jordan Szabo earned victories in both contests, helping clinch eight points total on the afternoon. All three players played singles and doubles in both contests. Efferding, the No. 13 player in the country, bested Damian Farinola of UL (6-1, 6-3) and later defeated Ivar Aramburu of Pan American (6-2, 6-3). Ore downed Jake Wynan of UL (6-4, 6-4) before dropping Juan Cruz-Soria of UTPA (6-1, 6-1). Szabo rolled over both his competitors, winning by a combined 24-4 in both matches. The sophomore beat Will Huyton (6-1, 6-2) in the first match and Mauricio Fosado (6-0, 6-1) in the second contest.

“Our guys really took it to our opponents in the doubles matches today, securing that vital point early,” Denton said. “We have to be ready to play and win the double point and not make any mental errors because if you do it is hard to recover.”

The Texas A&M men’s tennis team will be in action again next Saturday, January 25, when it hosts UTSA and Lamar at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. First serve is slated for noon against the Roadrunners and 4 p.m. against the Cardinals. To learn more about the team, visit AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieMTEN on Twitter.
