COLLEGE STATION- Texas A&M Women’s Basketball hosted the Gary Blair Coaching Academy for the second straight year, with 112 coaches from junior high, high school and collegiate programs attending to hear the strategies, drills and philosophy of Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Gary Blair and the Aggie coaching staff from Oct. 5-6.

“Our job is to help people grow the game, and I think that this past weekend we did a good job of that, and hopefully the Academy participants thought the same,” said Blair.

The event ran Saturday to Sunday, and featured insight to the Aggie program, as the clinic featured on-floor demonstrations from the Aggie basketball team, along with video and lecture components in the Cox-McFerrin Center for Aggie Basketball.

“I think our players enjoyed it because they had 112 people watching practice, and they were able to play at a higher level knowing that they were being evaluated by our present coaching staff and being looked on favorably from the high school coaches,” added Blair.

The high school coaches, who hail from three states (Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana) received an 100-page notebook that included drills and reference material to take home.

“It’s our job as a college program, and one that has won the national championship, to give back to the game and particularly give back to the high schools who have done a great job of furnishing us with the talent that keeps us in the Top 25 each year,” said Blair. “I thought that Coach Starkey did a great job of organizing the camp, and getting a great base of coaches from a three-state area in here. Hopefully in years to come, we can keep the tradition going of teaching and growing the game, because that’s what Texas A&M is all about. Tradition and Leadership.”

The Aggies open their season on Nov. 3, hosting Oklahoma City in an exhibition game in Reed Arena. Texas A&M opens the regular season on Nov. 11 at North Texas.
