COLLEGE STATION – The second-ranked Texas A&M men’s golf team is back in action this week when it tees off at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at the Old Overton Country Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
Following a practice round on Sunday, the tournament, which is hosted by the University of Alabama, officially begins with 36 holes Monday before concluding with a final round on Tuesday morning.
“We’re excited to go play,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “This will be a new one for us since we have never been to this golf course. Most of the teams in the field have been here before so we are going to have to do a really good job of preparing and paying attention during the practice round. Our guys are playing great and we’re excited to get out there and go.”
The Aggies are coming off an impressive opening to the season as they took runner-up honors during their last action at the Dick’s Challenge Cup on Sept. 20-21. The strong showing helped the Aggies ascend to the second spot in the most recent version of the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and the Golfstat Relative Ranking.
The Old Overton Country Club was founded in 1993 and features a course that will play at par 70 and 7,204 yards this week.
Joining Texas A&M in the 12-team field is No. 1 (Golfweek/Sagarin) Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi State, North Carolina-Charlotte, Texas, UTSA, No. 12 UAB, UNLV and No. 17 Vanderbilt.
“The field is really strong, but we are going to face strong competition the rest of the fall and into the spring,” Higgins added. “We need to come ready to play every day. We’re also going to keep an eye on the storm in the gulf. It might be wet and could impact course conditions but we will be prepared and deal with that as it comes.”
Crancers enters the tournament riding a hot streak after the Kirkwood, Mo., native was honored as Player of the Week by Golf Week on Sept. 23 following an individual medalist performance at the Dick’s Challenge Cup.
Round one of the tournament begins Monday at 7:30 a.m. with a double tee start. The Aggies are slated to begin teeing off at 8:20 a.m. on the No. 10 tee box.
