COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M equestrian freshman Izzy Norton starts her Aggie career this fall after winning the Virginia Horse Show Association (VHSA) Medal Finals this summer.
Norton (Falls Church, Va.) won the junior riders medal at the Lexington National Horse Show after qualifying for the event through a series of VHSA shows. The incoming freshman had planned to compete on her equitation horse, but a sore shoulder forced Norton to scratch him. Instead, she competed on her jumper horse, Veronika and worked with a substitute trainer, Sue Kyllonen.
Norton also credits her success to Aggie teammate, junior Kat Barkema, who helped Norton prepare for the event. The medal finals consisted of written and practicum tests – including equitation and over fences – in the US Equestrian Team (USET) format. Norton’s horse, Veronika, had only competed in a couple of USET formats before the show.
Norton, who will compete in equitation and over fences for the Aggies, and the rest of the Texas A&M equestrian squad will show in the annual Maroon & White Scrimmage on Sept. 20. The Aggies’ first official meet is Oct. 5 at Kansas State.
