Three Aggies chosen SEC Athlete of the Week in track and field
BIRMINGHAM - Three Texas A&M track and field athletes were chosen for SEC Athlete of the Week honors following their first outdoor meet of the season while preseason outdoor national team rankings by United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) have the Aggie men ranked No. 1 with the women No. 6.
Sam Humphreys and Shelbi Vaughan, who earned National Athlete of the Week accolades from USTFCCCA on Monday, were each named SEC Field Event Athlete of the Week by the SEC office while Ashton Purvis claimed the women's SEC Runner of the Week honor.
Purvis won the 100 meters at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational with a time of 11.35 seconds, which is the U.S. and collegiate leader for the 2013 season and currently ranks second in the world. On the Aggie all-time list Purvis moves to No. 8 in the 100 meters with her 11.35.
Purvis also ran the second leg of A&M's winning 4x100 relay, which set a world-leading time of 43.31 in breaking its own meet record of 43.56 established last year.
Humphreys also bettered his meet record in the javelin with a winning mark of 267-1 (81.40) while Vaughan bettered a 10-year-old Aggie discus school record with each of her six throws, topped with a mark of 185-0 (56.40).
PRESEASON NATIONAL OUTDOOR RANKINGS
Texas A&M returns a healthy dose of scoring potential from last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships where both the men and women finished third in team scoring. As a result the preseason outdoor rankings have tabbed the Aggie men No. 1 while the women are No. 6 in the nation.
This marks the second time the Texas A&M men have received a No. 1 preseason outdoor ranking. The previous No. 1 status came in 2009 with the Aggies started a string of three consecutive NCAA Outdoor titles.
Ranking behind the A&M men are Arkansas, the NCAA Indoor champions; Florida, the defending NCAA Outdoor champions; as well as Texas and Auburn among the top five. Ahead of the Aggie women in the preseason rankings are Kansas, Oregon, Arizona, LSU and Texas.
