Sumlin is very familiar with Hagen, who actually served on the same Purdue coaching staff as Sumlin in 2000. Hagen also spent the past two seasons on Kevin Wilson's Indiana Hoosiers coaching staff. Sumlin and Wilson coached together at Oklahoma from 2003-07. The addition of Hagen completes the Texas A&M coaching staff, and Sumlin also announced a couple of responsibility changes with Clarence McKinney being named offensive coordinator and David Beaty taking on the recruiting coordinator designation.
"I've known Mark for quite some time and I have been impressed with his work," Sumlin said. "He has a wide range of experience not only on defense but as a special teams coordinator and a recruiting coordinator as well. He has hit the ground running and I am pleased that our coaching staff is now complete."
Entering his 18th year as a college coach, Hagen comes to Texas A&M after serving as the Hoosiers' defensive tackles and special teams coordinator from 2011-12. Hagen added recruiting coordinator to his responsibilities in 2012.
"I am very excited to join Coach Sumlin and the entire staff here at Texas A&M," Hagen said. "It is a storied program with rich tradition, especially on defense and at the linebacker position. I think we have some terrific young people already here and I know we have some excellent prospects coming in. I look forward to working with the linebacker corps.
"I've worked with Kevin before at Purdue and I knew he would be an excellent coach and I have the utmost respect for him and the entire Aggie staff. They had a great year last year in the first season in the SEC and I look forward to this great opportunity."
Prior to his two-year stint at his alma mater, Hagen served as an assistant coach at Purdue for 11 seasons from 2000-10. During that time, Hagen served a variety of roles as assistant head coach from 2005-08, linebackers coach from 2006-07 and 2009-10, defensive tackles coach from 2000-05 and 2008 and special teams coordinator from 2003-08.
Hagen's first coaching job came at Northern Illinois, where he coached the defensive tackles from 1996-99.
Hagen was a four-year football letterwinner for the Hoosiers and was named second-team All-Big Ten linebacker in 1990 and 1991. He served as team captain as a senior in 1991and was the Copper Bowl Defensive MVP that season. He earned his bachelor's degree in marketing in 1991 and earned his master's in sports marketing and management from IU in 1995. An excellent student, Hagen was three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Hagen and his wife, Denise, have four daughters: Abby, Emma, Ellie and Ava.
