  • The game will be televised nationally by CBS, marking the first time since Jan. 1, 1998 that the Aggies have appeared on the network. In that game, UCLA rallied for a 29-23 win over the Aggies in the 1998 Cotton Bowl.
  • The Aggies' matchup with top-ranked Alabama will be their 12th all-time meeting against the No. 1 team in the Associated Press Top 25. The Aggies are 1-10 in the previous games against No. 1 teams, with the lone victory being a 30-26 win over Oklahoma in 2002.
  • Alabama holds a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series, with A&M's lone win in the series being a 20-16 win by Gene Stallings' Aggies over Paul "Bear" Bryant's Crimson Tide in the 1968 Cotton Bowl. A player under Bryant at Texas A&M from 1954-56, Stallings later served as Alabama's head coach from 1990-96.
  • It will be the Aggies' first-ever trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Aggies have faced Alabama twice in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl, in Birmingham, Ala. in 1985 (L, 23-10) and in College Station in 1988 (L, 30-10). The 1988 game was dubbed the "Hurricane Bowl" because the game was moved from the original date of Sept. 17 to Dec. 1 due to concerns about Hurricane Gilbert.

ABOUT THE BCS Standings, Top 25

Texas A&M was ranked No. 15 in the fourth (Nov. 4) Bowl Championship Series standings of 2012. The Aggies were one of seven SEC schools in the BCS top 25.

The Aggies were in the top 25 polls for the fifth straight week. The Aggies' dominating 38-13 win at Mississippi State on Saturday resulted in a boost as A&M climbed two spots to No. 14 in the USA Today coaches poll and one spot in the Associated Press media poll.

Chasing the fun 'n' gun...

Texas A&M's 2012 offense is on pace to break the SEC's total offense per game average of 534.4, which was set by the 1995 Florida Gators.

Sumlin Against ranked teams

Top-ranked Alabama will be the fifth ranked team faced by Texas A&M in 2012 with the Aggies holding a 2-2 record in those contests. In his fifth overall season as a head coach, first-year Aggie coach Kevin Sumlin has a career record of 5-3 against ranked teams (in the Associated Press poll).

Winning away from home

First-year Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin's teams have won 11 straight games away from their home field -- six at the University of Houston and five at Texas A&M. Sumlin's last road loss was at Texas Tech in the Cougars' regular season finale in 2010.

Fast starters/scorers

  • A&M has scored first in every game in 2012, and in 14 straight games dating back to 2011.
  • A&M has scored on seven of nine opening drives in 2012, totaling 45 points and 26 first downs. The Aggies have scored a touchdown on their opening drive in six straight games.
  • A&M averages eight plays and 62 yards on its opening drive of the game.
  • Meanwhile, A&M has forced 3-and-outs on its opponent's first possession of the game six times this season.
  • A&M has 18 scoring drives of five plays or less ... and three scoring drives on only one play.

Re-Writing the Record Book

The Aggies set school records for total, passing and scoring offense just last year with future NFL draft picks Ryan Tannehill and Cyrus Gray leading the way. The 2012 Aggies are on pace to re-break all three marks by healthy margins.

A&M's rushing offense isn't on school record pace, but its SEC-best average of 251.3 is the highest since averaging 259.1 rushing yards per game in 1991.

Texas A&M's most recent top 10 road victory, and highest ranked road win ever, was a 27-14 win over No. 6 Penn State in State College in 1979.

Surging rushers

Head coach Kevin Sumlin has been preaching about needing all three of his top-flight running backs as the season progressed, and the Aggie rushers have been surging in past two games.

The Aggies are one of just three teams in the NCAA FBS that rank in the top 20 statistically in rushing, passing, total and scoring offense (others are Louisiana Tech and Oklahoma State). The Aggies rank No. 4 in scoring offense (44.7 points per game), No. 5 in total offense (559.6 yards per game), No. 10 in rushing (251.3) and No. 17 in passing (308.2).

Prolific Scoring

Texas A&M has scored 402 points in its first nine games of 2012, and are one of just five teams nationally with 400 or more points so far this season. A&M had hit the 400-point plateau just seven times previously in program history.

SEC Freshman of the Week honors

Redshirt freshman QB Johnny Manziel has been won or shared the SEC Freshman of the Week honor after six of the Aggies' nine games in 2012, including the past two games. He was also named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week twice.

Manziel on pace for 3,000/1,000

With 922 rushing yards and 2,527 passing yards through nine games and with four games ahead of him, Johnny Manziel is on pace to become the fifth FBS player and first freshman to reach 1,000 rushing yards and 3,000 passing yards in a season.

Freshman 2,000/1,000

QB Johnny Manziel needs 78 rushing yards to become the second freshman in NCAA FBS history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 2,000 yards in a season. The only previous 1,000/2,000 freshman in FBS history is former Missouri QB Brad Smith, who rushed for 1,029 yards and passed for 2,333 yards in 2002.

Swope's Career Stacks Up

Senior WR Ryan Swope has 225 catches for 2,845 yards in his career at A&M. Since he didn't play all four years in the SEC, his career statistics don't register on the conference career lists. If they did, he would be nearing SEC records for receptions (236 by Earl Bennett, Vanderbilt, 2005-07) and receiving yards (3,093 by Terrence Edwards, Georgia, 1999-2002).

1,000-Yard Receivers

Redshirt freshman WR Mike Evans has a team-high 56 catches 802 yards in the first nine games of 2012, which puts him on pace for 80 catches and 1,158 yards. If he reaches 1,000 receiving yards, that would mean that the Aggies would have three straight years with a 1,000-yard receiver, and all three by different players.

TD Responsibility

Redshirt freshman QB Johnny Manziel is responsible for 31 touchdowns (15 rush, 16 rush) in 2012, which already ranks No. 3 in school history behind Jerrod Johnson's record of 38 TDs in 2009 and Ryan Tannehill's 33 in 2011. In the SEC record book, Manziel's 31 TDs  is tied for No. 17 Eli Manning of Ole Miss (2001), Chris Leak of Florida (2004) and Erik Ainge of Tennessee (2007).

On Pace

Entering the Alabama game, the Aggies are on pace to make significant additions to the SEC record book: on pace for a 580 points (611 by Florida in 14 games in 2008); 44.6 scoring average (46.6 by Florida in 12 games in 1996); pace for 362 first downs (344 by Auburn in 2010).

Manziel's Record Chase

Redshirt freshman QB Johnny Manziel has generated 3,449 total yards in first nine games, which already ranks No. 18 in SEC history. His 383.2 total offense average, projected over 13 games, would generate 4,981 yards, which would break 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton's SEC record by over 500 yards.

One of a Kind Manziel

QB Johnny Manziel is the only player in NCAA FBS history to log three games with 300 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in a season. The 300/100 feat had been accomplished 39 times in FBS history entering 2012, and  four players have done it twice, which means he also holds NCAA career record for 300/100 games. Reggie McNeal is the only other A&M QB with a 300/100 game on his resume (349 pass, 100 rush vs. SMU, 2005).

Nine in a row for Evans

Redshirt freshman WR Mike Evans has four or more catches in nine straight games or every game this season, which has been only previously accomplished by Jeff Fuller, who had 11 straight games with four or more catches over the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Swope's Recovery

Since leaving the game after an illegal hit against Louisiana Tech, senior WR Ryan Swope has made a team-best 25 catches for 342 yards over the past three games.

Back in the Lineup

Since missing the Louisiana Tech game due to a suspension, junior LB Steven Jenkins has made a team-high 23 tackles over the last three games.

Opening Drives

The Aggie defense has forced a punt on seven of nine opening drives. The Aggie offense has scored on seven of nine opening drives (forced to punt vs. SMU and South Carolina State).

On second half opening drives, A&M has scored in four of nine games, including TDs vs. Auburn and Mississippi State in the two most recent games ... defensively, opponents have been limited to two scores in nine games, including four straight games without a score.

Milestones ahead

Junior RB Ben Malena needs 104 rushing yards to hit 1,000 for his career ... senior LB Jonathan Stewart needs nine tackles to hit 200 for his career.

Chasing Legends

The nation's No. 2 freshman scorer Johnny Manziel with 15 touchdowns is within shouting distance of the NCAA freshman record of 23 set by Marshall Faulk of San Diego State in 1991 ... He's also chasing the NCAA freshman record of 3,827 total offense yards set by Jared Lorenzen of Kentucky in 2000.

oFFENSE

  • The Aggies have gained 400 or more yards in eight straight games, which has never been done before in school history. Previous high streak of 400-plus games was six.

  • The Aggies' freshman WR trio of Mike Evans, Thomas Johnson and Sabian Holmes have produced a first down or TD on 51 of their 89 combined catches (57.3 percent).
  • 29 of the Aggies' 38 total catches in third-down situations have produced a first down or touchdown (76.3 percent).
  • For the season, the Aggies have outscored their opponents by double-digits in all four quarters, but have been especially dominant in the second stanza with a 151-47 scoring advantage.
  • A&M has four turnover-free games in 2012, which is the most by the Aggies since 2010 when they had four.
  • Texas A&M is completing 66.0 percent of its pass attempts in 2012, which is well ahead of the school record percentage of 61.6 set last season.

  • Texas A&M has 27 sacks from 12 different players in 2012.
  • The Aggies have at least one sack in eight of nine games.
  • A&M opponents have fumbled 10 times but lost just one.
  • Junior DE Damontre Moore averages 1.31 QB sacks per game, which is more than 19 teams in the NCAA FBS.
  • Moore ranks No. 2 nationally in tackles for loss (2.11/G) and tied for No. 2 in QB sacks (1.28/G)
  • Moore is leading the Aggies in tackles, which has been achieved by a DL just twice in last 40 years.
  • The only defensive back to start in every game is senior Steven Terrell.
  • The defensive line has had the same four starters in every game: Damontre Moore and Julien Obioha at DE and Kirby Ennis and Spencer Nealy at DT.
  • Senior LBs Sean Porter and Jonathan Stewart have also started every game.
  • The Aggies have scored TDs via fumble return, interception return and punt return in a single season for the first time since 2001.
  • The Aggies have held opponents to 165 rushing yards or less in eight of nine games in 2012. Only LSU, with 219 rushing yards in game 8, has broken the 200-yard plateau.
  • Opponents are completing only 56.9 percent of their passes after connecting on 62.4 percent in 2011.

Special Teams

  • Just a season after ranking among the worst net punting teams in the nation, the Aggies rank No. 3 nationally with a 41.9 average. Last year, the Aggies ranked 94th with a 35.0 average.
  • Punter Ryan Epperson had his season-high two "coffin corner" boots in SEC games against Florida, Arkansas and LSU.
  • In the hidden yards department, A&M has gained 902 yards on kickoff and punt returns, while allowing only 483 opponent return yards.
  • A&M hold a significant advantage in average return in both kickoffs and punts -- 23.7-18.7 on kickoff returns and 15.2-4.2 on punt returns.
  • The Aggies have had 10 or more kickoffs in four of nine games in 2012.
  • Since Dustin Harris' monster punt return game against South Carolina State (8-246), he's gained just 34 yards on nine returns.
  • In the kicking game, punter Ryan Epperson has one touchback on 27 boots and kicker Taylor Bertolet has registered a touchback on 48-of-72 kickoffs.
  • Taylor Bertolet booted a career-high three field goals against LT, including a career-long 54-yarder. The 54-yarder was the longest by an Aggie since Terrence Kitchens' 62-yard bomb against Southern Miss in 1999. Bertolet also had a 50-yarder against LSU. He became the first Aggie with multiple 50-yard boots in a season since Kitchens in 1999.
  • A&M opponents have just eight punt returns in 2012 for a total of 34 yards with a long return of 13 yards
  • Senior Ryan Epperson is averaging 43.9 yards per punt, which would rank in a tie for No. 13 nationally if he had the requisite 3.6 punts per game to qualify for the NCAA statistics.
  • Last season's NCAA punt return champ Dustin Harris is averaging 14.4 yards per return, which ranks No. 10 nationally.
  • Dustin Harris had a school record 246 yards on eight punt returns vs. SC State for a gaudy 30.8 average, including a 96-yard TD return that was the second-longest in school history.
  • In a bit of a rarity, starting OT Jake Matthews, son of NFL Hall of Famer Bruce, is A&M's deep snapper.
  • Freshman KO returner Trey Williams broke off a 76-yard return against LSU, which was the longest since 2010 when Coryell Judie had an 84-yard TD return against Baylor.

A&M-Alabama connections

There are a litany of connections between Texas A&M and Alabama, but the most notable are the trio of head coaches that have led both the Aggies and the Crimson Tide. Paul "Bear" Bryant coached the Aggies from 1954-57 before leaving for Alabama. One of Bryant's players at A&M, Gene Stallings was the head coach at Texas A&M from 1965-1971 and later the head coach at Alabama from 1990-96. Dennis Franchione was the Tide's head coach from 2001-02 before leaving for Aggieland and heading up the Texas A&M program from 2003-07. Another former A&M head coach, Jackie Sherrill, was a player for Bryant at Alabama and later coached the Aggies from 1982-1988.

"maroon Goons" paving the way

Paving the way for the Aggies' record-setting offense is the biggest offensive front in school history, which features a pair of tackles that have been projected to be NFL first-round draft picks in the future. The starting five, self-titled the "Maroon Goons," of senior Patrick Lewis (C), juniors Luke Joeckel (OT) and Jake Matthews (OT) and sophomores Cedric Ogbuehi (OG) and Jarvis Harrison (OG) weigh in at 1,542 pounds or 308.4 per goon.

Joeckel and Matthews have been projected as first-round picks by several sources, and the pair are on the watch lists for the Outland Award (best interior lineman) and the Rotary Lombardi Award (best lineman or linebacker). Lewis is on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy (most outstanding center).

Here's the Beef

  • With the Maroon Goons clearing the way, the Aggies have produced five 600-yard total offense games in 2012, including a season-high 716 yards against Arkansas.
  • The Aggies are averaging 5.9 yards per carry, which is slightly ahead of the school record of 5.8 set in 1990.
  • The Aggies lead the SEC in total offense, rushing offense and scoring offense.
  • Aggies have gained 400 or more total yards in a school-record eight straight games
  • The Aggies are converting 54.0 percent of third-down situations (76-of-140).

  • Manziel generates 383.2 yards of total offense per game, which is more than 48 teams in the NCAA FBS.
  • Manziel has run or thrown for 53 20-yard plus plays in 2012 or 5.9 per game.

New scheme, same results

Aggie defensive boss Mark Snyder's new 4-3 defensive scheme gets pressure from all over the front seven with a whopping 12 defenders with at least a half-sack, including six defensive linemen, five linebackers and a defensive back.

Similar to  last year when they led the nation in sacks, the Aggies are again near the top of the NCAA quarterback sacks chart with 27 or 3.0 per game, which is tied for No. 11 in the FBS and tied for No. 2 in the SEC. Last season the Aggies led the nation with 51 sacks (3.9 per game).

Moore in rare air

Junior DE Damontre Moore leads the Aggies in tackles with 69 stops. The last defensive lineman to lead the Aggies in tackles was Sam Adams, who led the way with 78 tackles in his All-America season in 1993. In fact, only two defensive linemen have led the Aggies in tackles in the last 40 years: Adams and two-time All-American Ray Childress.

Moore is building on his strong play down the stretch in 2011 with an All-America-type 2012. In his last 15 games, Moore has compiled an incredible 17.5 sacks and 31.5 tackles for loss.
