Aggies Go 1-1 at Spring Klein College Classic
SPRING, Texas - The Texas A&M softball team continued its fall schedule Saturday, splitting a pair of games at the Spring Klein College Classic.
A 0-3 loss to Houston dampened the start of the tournament, but A&M came out in full force for game two to take an 11-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin. The Aggies are now 3-1 on the fall exhibition season.
Senior Mel Dumezich pitched a complete game vs. Houston, retiring the first 12 batters she faced and striking out nine. The right hander allowed three runs on three hits and two walks.
Sophomore Brittany Clopton headlined the Aggies' offensive effort in game one, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Dumezich was 1-for-2 with a walk.
A team effort in game two ended the day well as sophomores Lauren Ainsley and Sarah Mireles combined for the 11-2 victory from the circle. Ainsley's five-inning outing earned the win as she allowed just one unearned run on five hits and no walks while fanning six batters. Mireles threw two innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits and striking out one.
Senior Sydney Shannon led from the plate with two home runs, a two RBI walk and three runs scored for a 2-for-3 effort. Freshman Cali Lanphear was also 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a walk. The quick-footed rookie plated a pair of runs on the triple and scored a run of her own.
Junior Cassie Tysarczyk was 2-for-4 from the batter's box, while junior Nicole Morgan was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and a run scored. Sophomore Lauren Tamayo had a 1-and-3 outing with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored.
Up next, A&M hosts a doubleheader against McLennan College on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Aggie Softball Complex. Game one starts at 4 p.m. and game two is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
