COLLEGE STATION, Texas -No. 16/13 Texas A&M will face its second consecutive top ten opponent early in the 2012-2013 season as they host No.9/9 Penn State Wednesday night at Reed Arena. The Aggies fell at No. 8 Louisville last Friday night by a score 47-45. Penn State enters the game ranked No. 9 in both polls having won their opening game against Howard 72-61 last Sunday.
The contest will be televised by FSN on FSN Southwest, FSN Southwest Plus or Fox College Sports depending on your cable provider. Check your local listings or with your cable provider for availability in your area.
The Aggies (0-1) are in the middle of a daunting three game stretch of top-ten opponents, the first time in program history that the Aggies have faced such a stretch. Texas A&M opened the season with a loss for the first time since the 2004-2005 season, Gary Blair's second season at Texas A&M. Under Blair the Aggies are 9-0 in home openers.
Junior Kelsey Bone began the year with a strong effort against Louisville contributing her first double-double of the season, 14 points and 12 rebounds. The double-double was Bone's 15th of her career, she was 5-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free throw line in 34 minutes of play. Senior Kristi Bellock added seven points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Junior Karla Gilbert narrowly missed a double-double with seven points and 11 rebound in 19 minutes off the bench.
The Nittany Lions are led by preseason All-Big Ten guard Maggie Lucas and Alex Bentley and return four starters from last year's 26-7 squad. Penn State was 7-1 in road contests and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen one year ago. Penn State opened the season on Sunday with a 72-61 win at home, led by Lucas' 25 points in 35 minutes of play. Senior Mia Nickson added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Nittany Lions forced 19 Howard turnovers and turned them into 24 points.
Penn State and Texas A&M have met once before in a Thanksgiving tournament in Malibu in 2008. The Aggies defeated a resilient Nittany Lion squad 61-57, Takia Starks had 20 points and Danielle Gant added 14 points.
